Calling out Fake News

Tonnes of false Facebook rumours and rubbish in the tabloids floating round at the minute, so I thought it worth taking a second to clear some of it up. These are the two I’ve been asked about the most, and neither of them are true!!

FAKE NEWS NUMBER 1) Government is withdrawing it’s support for homeless people during COVID:

WRONG - In reality Gov has offered extra funding for this and more than 90% of street homeless have been offered housing, including pretty much all of those in Mansfield. The Government were absolutely clear - ‘‘any suggestion that we are reneging on promises, removing funding or asking people to leave hotels is simply incorrect, and is causing needless anxiety and confusion for vulnerable people’’.

FAKE NEWS NUMBER 2) Government plans to freeze the pay of nurses and other public servants to pay for COVID spending:

WRONG - In reality there are absolutely no plans to do this and nobody representing Government has ever suggested that there is! Articles in the media based on gossip from unnamed sources are rarely ever anything more than individuals trying to cause problems for Government. This rumour has absolutely no basis in fact.

I’m always happy to clarify these things but I’d urge people to consider when they read this stuff - and before you message me with lots of CAPITAL LETTERS AND ANGRY EXCLAMATION MARKS - who is the source, do they actually speak for Government or is it somebody unnamed with lots of ‘could’ and ‘might’? More often than not it’s the latter, and the content is actually a lot of rubbish.
