Working cross-party to improve education

Today I spoke in a Westminster Hall debate organised by Alex Norris, MP for Nottingham North.

I wanted to attend and support him in raising the issue of educational attainment and the impact of early intervention. It was great that he recognised my recent debate on the attainment of white working-class boys in his speech too. An example of cross-party working and support on a key issue!

I also asked Ministers from the Department of Education about whether we can make more of our free childcare offer in early years settings by changing the eligibility criteria.

At the minute, a family earning £199k a year could get 30 hours free childcare, but a single mum doing 30 hours on minimum wage cannot..

It's absolutely right to recognise the importance and the huge number of children who have benefitted from the free childcare offers introduced by this Government, but I think we could focus that more effectively on the children most in need of help.
