Education Select Committee

March 28, 2019

On Wednesday I had a welcome rest from Brexit in the morning and attended an Education Select Committee session looking at knife crime and school exclusions. It was a really informative session and a good chance to talk to experts who see these issues on a daily basis.

We discussed the issues surrounding knife crime and school exclusions with representatives from government, education, policing and the charitable sector. The session took evidence from Assistant Commissioner, London Metropolitan Police, Will Linden, Professor of Education at St Mary’s University, Sir Michael Wilshaw and from Senior Caseworker Rescue & Response for St Giles Trust, Carlie Thomas.

The aim of the session was to discuss if there is any link between the rise in exclusions and an increase in knife crime, examining some of the factors which may have led to the rise, as well as whether there is a correlation between knife crime and school exclusions.

The Committee has previously highlighted the importance of alternative provision and early intervention in preventing exclusion. These issues are really important and tie into education priorities locally across Mansfield and Warsop.
