Huntington's Disease Awareness Month

May is Huntington's Disease Awareness Month and I just wanted to highlight the importance of raising awareness of this rare disease. I'd also like to thank one of my constituents for sharing his concerns about a lack of awareness about Huntington's. 

 

Huntington's disease is a condition caused by a faulty gene in your DNA that stops parts of the brain working properly over time. The symptoms increase over time and can affect movement, cognition and behaviour. Greater care and support are needed the longer someone has it.

 

The disease can often be mistaken for a different illness, such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's. This misdiagnosis means that it's even more important to raise awareness so we can identify Huntington's. 

 

Whilst there is currently no cure, the Huntington’s Disease Association website has some really useful information to understand the disease and lots of advice and support that may be available to sufferers and their families to help them live better with Huntington’s.
