Brexit Update

October 16, 2019

So the latest is this. The talks look set to go in to another FINAL final day, with a view to agreeing something with European leaders by Friday, which we can then discuss in Parliament in an historic Saturday sitting.

The talks being carried over into tomorrow is, oddly, a positive sign because they wouldn't be carrying on unless they genuinely felt a deal was on the cards. As has been said many times, this was always going to go down to the wire.

We obviously don't know full details of a deal yet. I'm encouraged though by the fact that the PM has very clearly sought an outcome that leads us towards a Free Trade Agreement with Europe as an independent nation, rather than Theresa May's previous deal which sought to tie us in to things like the EU Customs Union etc long term. Boris' plan is better, if he can swing it with EU leaders.

If a deal is agreed, it will have to be voted on this Saturday, I assume with a view to legislating for it next week. However it won't be plain sailing. Labour have already said they won't back it (without even waiting to see what it says) and will try to force an extension to Article 50 even if we agree a deal. Labour also want to put any deal to another referendum.

So things are positive, we're making genuine progress with a deal very possible before Saturday, but we're far from out of the woods yet.
